Gary Le Sueur

Founding Engineer · Technical Lead · Full-Stack

Open to new projects · Remote / hybrid UK

I've been writing code by hand for nearly 25 years, and I've fully embraced AI-assisted development as the next step in how great software gets built. I'm a hands-on founding engineer and technical leader, happiest in the messy early stages: talking to users, shaping the product, and turning an ambitious idea into software people can rely on. I took SCR Tracker from its first customer to £1M+ ARR and acquisition, and now build CalmCompliance, a secure multi-tenant B2B platform with production AI, evaluation, and observability. I set architecture and engineering direction while staying close to the code.

Experience

Founding Engineer · CalmCompliance

Jan 2025 - Present

Remote

  • One of two founding engineers, taking CalmCompliance from a blank sheet to a live product and shaping it day to day with the people who use it.
  • Designed and built connected workflows across premises and assets, maintenance, policies, risk assessments, training, incidents, and flexible forms, giving multi-site teams one place to run and evidence their compliance work.
  • Delivered practical features including QR-based reporting without an app or login, recurring schedules, document distribution and acknowledgements, and complete audit trails.
  • Built AI into policy drafting, risk assessments, and issue triage, helping users turn a blank page or raw report into useful, actionable compliance work more quickly.

President / Principal Engineer · Sign In App

Jan 2023 - Dec 2024

Remote

  • Led a two-year post-acquisition handover, transferring product and technical ownership through structured onboarding, pairing, live code reviews, and architectural documentation.
  • Integrated SCR Tracker into the wider Sign In App product by reshaping APIs and data pipelines while continuing to ship fixes, upgrades, and customer-led features.
  • Introduced production AI reporting, form generation, document summarisation, agents, and semantic retrieval with OpenAI, Inngest AgentKit, and MongoDB Atlas Vector Search.

Founding Engineer / Managing Director · SCR Tracker

Mar 2018 - Dec 2022

Bournemouth / Remote

  • Founded and built a multi-tenant recruitment-compliance SaaS platform for UK schools, growing it to £1M+ ARR and adoption by more than 2,000 schools.
  • Owned hands-on architecture and delivery across Next.js, React, TypeScript, Node.js, MongoDB, and AWS, including tenant isolation, permissions, auditability, and production operations.
  • Implemented ISO 27001, built and hired the team, and led technical and commercial due diligence through the successful acquisition by Sign In App.

Lead Developer · Sky (Contract)

Sep 2016 - Sep 2018

Isleworth

  • Built the core Sky Go desktop application from the ground up with Electron, React, Redux, Node.js, RxJS, and WebSockets.
  • Worked across design and backend teams to deliver a maintainable cross-platform product that remains in production across Sky Go and Sky Glass.
  • Mentored junior and graduate engineers as part of the lead team through pairing, technical guidance, and day-to-day development support.

Senior Developer · PureGym (Contract)

Dec 2015 - Jul 2016

Southampton

  • Delivered a React and C# customer booking platform for memberships and class reservations across more than 300 UK gyms.
  • Improved performance and reliability by tracing load bottlenecks and refining backend logic within a 12-person cross-functional team.

Senior Engineer & Technical Lead · Selected earlier work

1998 - 2015

UK

  • At McLaren F1, built high-throughput telemetry systems that ingested huge volumes of live data from the cars and turned it into real-time displays for engineers.
  • Spent roughly 12 years with Babcock delivering software for the Royal Navy in ISO 27001-controlled environments, including visits to submarines and surface ships to understand the operational context first-hand.
  • Progressed from junior developer to technical lead across real-time, defence, financial, and media systems, with additional work for BNP Paribas, Sky Go, NOW TV, and Codestone.

Side Projects

I build most of these to learn something new: a technology, a technique, or an idea, rather than to ship a product. Each one is a note on what I was trying to figure out.

Dungeon Master

An AI game master that runs tabletop-style adventures with generated music, sound effects and fully voiced characters.

Why I built it

Wanted to go deeper on AI-driven game mechanics and generative audio.

AI agentsElevenLabsGoogle LyriaPostgreSQL

Artemis Tracker

A 3D visualisation built on NASA's public Artemis II trajectory data, showing the mission's path around the Moon.

Why I built it

Space plus a throwback to my 3D-modelling and game-dev days, and an excuse to learn three.js.

three.jsWebGLNASA data

AskEaves

An MCP-first home-automation agent with a multi-condition rule engine and custom connectors for every smart device in the house.

Why I built it

Didn't gel with Home Assistant, so I started building my own AI-driven smart-home brain.

MCPAI agentsDockerRailway

Tidy

A person-first, Slack-style chat interface for conversations, with email as the transport rather than the UI.

Why I built it

To explore what email feels like when it is organised around people and conversations instead of inboxes and messages.

ElectronSQLiteDrizzleOpenAI

Skillup

A Duolingo-style geography app powered by AI-generated courses, designed to adapt to other subjects too.

Why I built it

My wife wanted to learn geography; I wanted to test AI course generation and get current with Expo.

ExpoReact NativeConvexTanStack Query

MakeMySite

A website generator that turns a short brief into a finished, deployable site, refined across several iterations.

Why I built it

One of my first AI builds. I wanted to see how far a generated-site pipeline could go.

Next.jsVercel AI SDKInngestBetter Auth

Filesnare

Send or receive files from anyone via a link, with every upload automatically virus-checked before it lands. No AI here.

Why I built it

Something I actually wanted day to day, plus an excuse to learn ClamAV, Docker and Railway.
